Self-Love: Why It’s Important
What better feeling is there than love? The feeling of being respected, appreciated, and supported can uplift your spirit and do wonders for your mental and physical wellbeing.
This holds true in all areas of life, especially relationships, friendships and at the workplace. This is precisely why we need to often take a moment out of our day and show compassion – not only to others but ourselves too.
While the concept of self-love might be centred around self-worth, self-respect, and self-esteem, ultimately, it’s all about self-compassion. Instead of living in shame, guilt, or regret, self-love is about focusing on your goals, needs, and wants.
Here are three practical tips on how you can practice self-love on a daily basis:
Have a Self-Care Routine and Follow It on a Regular Basis
Take a proactive approach by building a self-care routine that you could regularly incorporate into your life. This involves intentionally cultivating habits that help nurture your wellbeing.
Identify things that bring you joy, help you relax, or make you feel fulfilled. Whether it’s sketching, taking a walk in nature, meditating, or staying active, these are essential for your well-being.
Understand Your Emotions Through Journaling
During the course of the day, we can go through a range of emotions, from anxiety to exuberance to sadness. Self-love involves paying attention to your thoughts and feelings instead of minimising their relevance.
Journaling is one way you can learn to be in better control of your emotions, and helps you discover things about yourself. It can help you trace your thought patterns and give you a time when you can de-stress and wind down
Ignore Your Inner Critic
Some of us often practice self-sabotage by being our worst critics after we have disappointed someone or made a mistake. Doing so is, in fact, the opposite of self-love.
This could stem from the need to be a perfectionist, or the pressure of being expected to perform better in every area of life. In such scenarios, try to actively think about the positives in your life.
For example, if you have made a mistake at work, remind yourself about the many times you went above and beyond or were praised for a job done well. Negative thoughts lead to stress, which is why self-love is important as we become more resilient.
While self-love might not happen overnight, taking active steps to practice it will provide you with long-term benefits. Loving yourself is far from being narcissistic or self-absorbed. It is in fact a practical way to be a happier, balanced, effective person that not only you but everyone in your life will benefit from.
Remember that self-love is a journey. Making an active choice to practice it is a stepping stone to discover the best version of you.
